New research by Technavio shows that the 3D concrete printing market is projected to grow more than 12 percent over the next five years. According to Technavio, the global growth can be attributed to these three key factors:

• Increased Cost-Effectiveness — using 3D-printed pieces of concrete saves both time and money, including reducing transportation and storage costs. According to Technavio Construction Research Analyst Anju Ajay Kumar, "The cost of logistics is less in 3D concrete printing, as there is no need for extra tools and materials. Also, the technology enables limited consumption of general materials in construction. The cost of building frame construction is relatively less compared with 3D concrete printing technology. The printer builds a retained framework for a concrete base, partitions, and self-bearing walls."

Typically, 3D printing involves contour crafting, taking recycled construction materials, including sand, concrete and glass fiber. When constructing the piece, the printer first prints the foundation's framework, before reinforced components are added. Finally, the concrete is poured into place.

• Higher Labor Prices — According to Technavio, one main reason for higher housing prices is due to an increase in industry spending on skilled construction workers. "The precast technology eliminates the need for manual labor for constructing beams and columns. This technology has streamlined its process, thereby allowing different processes to be carried out simultaneously without the requirement of a large number of construction laborers. Installation of foundation and ground walls will begin by the time the concrete walls are cured, and the water and sanitary lines are also in place. After the due time, load-bearing precast walls are placed in position through hydraulic cranes," said Kumar.
• A Demand for Affordable Housing Options — Population growth has spurred on demand for housing in major cities across South America, Africa, India, along with emerging nations. Right now, the Kenyan government is prepared to provide all citizens with affordable housing, and India's Housing for All by 2022 initiative is working toward a similar goal. According to Technavio, these areas are currently seeing a housing shortage of 10 million apartments, and with numbers this large, precast construction has been deemed the best large-project option for cost-effective, fast and quality projects.
