ADOT has featured these creative and unusual signs for over a year.

The Arizona Department of Transportation launched a contest Monday to determine the next overhead sign safety message.

From "Hello from the other side, buckle up and stay alive," to "Don't turn your car into a Death Star, Drive focused," ADOT has featured these creative and unusual signs for over a year.

Now they're turning to Arizona residents for some inspiration.

People can submit sign ideas to the ADOT web page until Feb. 19. ADOT will post the finalists on their website in March for the public to decide the winner, then the message will be featured on overhead signs statewide for two days in April.

ADOT says anyone can submit as many as they like, but they must meet the following guidelines:

Signs accommodate three lines and 18 characters (including spaces) per line

#Hashtags, phone numbers, and website addresses are not allowed

Signs can't accommodate emojis

Kevin Biesty, ADOT deputy director for policy, said the campaign is a good way to start conversations about impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding, and aggressive driving. Biesty said ADOT's goal is to get to the point where these practices are socially unacceptable.
