The American Cancer Society of Michigan's annual Big Dig charity event is significant to the community of Detroit. This event is a unique opportunity for children fighting cancer to experience the joy of operating real construction equipment.

Alta Equipment Company, a leading industrial and construction equipment supplier, played a pivotal role in supporting the Big Dig team and bringing the Big Dig to patients at Children's Hospital in Detroit, Mich., on Sept. 26. September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

The Construction vs. Cancer event transforms the hospital grounds into an interactive construction site, complete with heavy-duty machinery such as mini-excavators, bulldozers and cranes. The patients, along with their families and caregivers, are presented with a unique opportunity to embody the role of construction workers and operate these large machines.

The impact of this event goes far beyond the joy it brings to the children. The Big Dig provides a much-needed reprieve from their daily battles with cancer. It offers a respite from the hospital environment, allowing them to create joyful memories with their loved ones while engaging in an empowering and immersive experience.

Children who are undergoing cancer treatment often face physical limitations, but during the Big Dig event, they are encouraged to embrace their inner strength and take control of the vehicles. This empowering and confidence-boosting activity provides them with a sense of normalcy and allows them to temporarily escape the challenges that come with their medical condition.

Alta's partnership with the Construction vs. Cancer team embodies its commitment to giving back to the community. By generously supporting this event, Alta helped hundreds of children to participate.

It serves as the organization's primary fundraising event, with proceeds supporting cancer research, patient care programs and community outreach initiatives. The involvement of Alta and other sponsors ensures that the American Cancer Society of Michigan can continue its vital work, offering hope and support to cancer patients and their families.

By bringing the Big Dig experience directly to the patients at Children's Hospital, Alta has helped create a lasting positive memory for these brave children. Additionally, the funds raised from this event will contribute to critical cancer research and the development of new treatment options.

The success of the Construction vs. Cancer event has inspired similar initiatives across the country, allowing children fighting cancer in other regions to experience the same joy and empowerment. The partnership between Alta and the Construction vs. Cancer team continues to grow, spreading hope and happiness to children battling cancer.
