Amtrak has chosen a group of firms to spearhead an extensive redevelopment of Baltimore's Penn Station. The company announced Dec. 14 that it will negotiate solely with Penn Station Partners, a group made up of Beatty Development, Armada Hoffler Properties, Cross Street Partners and Gensler and more, the Baltimore Sun reported.

"This development is a historic opportunity for Amtrak and Penn Station Partners to bring to life a bold future for Penn Station, generating jobs and sustained economic opportunities for our Baltimore communities and beyond," said Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh in a statement.

  • Construction would include: up to 1.6 million sq. ft. of retail, residential and office space across five acres around the station;
  • renovation of the historic station's upper floors to turn them into a hotel; and
  • renovation of the station's main level, including more space for vendors, the Baltimore Sun reported.

"I am confident that this team, which is comprised of local Baltimore businesses, understands how urgent the redevelopment of Penn Station is to the City of Baltimore," said Rep. Elijah E. Cummings in a statement. "This team brings the expertise essential to ensuring that the full potential of this resource is finally tapped to support economic growth and revitalization."

"There's this whole sense of entry to Baltimore, culminating in the station," Bill Struever, principal of Cross Street Partners, said. "We're eager to take this greeting to Baltimore and make it wonderful."
