Atlantic Coast Cranes and Machinery Inc. (ACC) is approaching its 10-year anniversary with a new corporate headquarters in Virginia and an expansion into North and South Carolina. ACC is a full-service Terex American Crane dealer, handling sales and rentals of new and used cranes as well as parts and service. ACC also services its import/export crane parts and sales business from its Virginia headquarters.
The company is soon moving its headquarters from Richmond to Hanover AirPark in Ashland, VA. The new building, to be occupied on May 1, will include a new shop and parts warehouse area. The steelwork has been completed and the masonry will soon be finished on the approximately 8,000-sq.-ft. (720 sq m) structure. This single-story building will include a 28-ft. (8.5 m) high shop area with provisions for an overhead crane.
ACC also has expanded into North and South Carolina by purchasing assets of a similar business, Alpha America Corp. in Charlotte. According to Waldo “Wally” Jones Jr., president/owner of Atlantic Coast Cranes, the company leased Alpha America’s building and hired key personnel on the first of this year. With offices now in Richmond, Ashland and Charlotte, ACC is able to service customers in Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, as well as North and South Carolina.
In addition to being a predominately Terex American lifting dealer, ACC also handles numerous other manufacturers. ACC deals in equipment, parts and service for manufacturers such as: P & H, Lorain, Northwest, Bucyrus-Erie, Koehring, RO Stinger, Galion, PPM Cranes, Bantam and Tadano. ACC not only carries cranes but also stocks Terex rough-terrain forklifts.
ACC’s newest item in stock is the Terex American HC 210 hydraulic, 210-ton (189 t) capacity crawler crane. According to Jones, N & N Contractors of Upper Marlboro, MD, recently took delivery of this piece of equipment.
ACC also has recently sold a new Terex T-560 to Millennium Cranes of Capitol Heights, MD. The Terex T-560 was originally sold as a T-550 and was recently upgraded to a T-560, 60-ton (54 t) crane at no additional charge. The customer and operator are both thrilled with its performance, quietness, ease of operation and handling.
A large part of ACC’s business is supplying parts and service for the equipment it sells or rents. ACC stocks parts such as jibs, booms, sheaves, shafts and buckets. The company has five maintenance trucks operated by factory trained mechanics to service customers.
ACC also offers training on its equipment, including instruction on Terex American cranes, boom repair and crane inspection. ACC’s worldwide customers include regular customers in Nigeria, Western Europe, Australia and the Far East.
ACC initiated a Crane Remanufacturing Program in 1993, which enables a ready-to-retire Terex American crawler crane to be remanufactured for considerably less than the cost of a new crane of the same caliber. The result is a like-new crane fully certified by Terex American Cranes with a factory warranty and a new serial number identifying it as remanufactured. ACC was one of the first companies authorized by Terex American Crane to remanufacture Terex American crawler cranes.
“We think it’s a great concept for a number of reasons,” said Jones. “We’re really excited about it. It gives a contractor a piece of equipment that is fully warranted and performs as if it were new, yet he gets it at a price that is considerably less than the cost of a brand new crane.”
Richmond-based W.O. Grubb Crane Rental Inc., in conjunction with ACC, has remanufactured the program’s first crane. The remanufacture of an American 9299 165-ton (148.5 t) crawler crane was performed in Grubb’s shop and its mechanics handled the entire overhaul procedure with help from factory representatives.
“Grubb simply had the facilities here in Richmond to handle this project,” said Jones. “They did a great job with it, and we were all pleased with how well it turned out.”
Jones also noted that ACC has the complete facilities and ability to perform the same operation. In recent developments, a company in California has negotiated an American 9299 remanufacture with ACC.
Since opening in 1991, Terex American Crane Corporation has named ACC as a Top Ten Dealer for 1994, 1995 and 1996. To commemorate its 10-year anniversary, and to introduce its new headquarters, ACC will hold a grand opening and open house celebration this summer.
“We at ACC are very excited about the New Year, as it is the company’s 10th Anniversary,” said Jones. “We have expanded into North and South Carolina with a full-service facility in Charlotte, NC and with a great group of experienced crane people from the Alpha America Company. We will be moving into our new headquarter building in Ashland, VA, in May, located just off Interstate 95 North of Richmond. This is all to better serve our customers with experience and integrity. What a year!”
