Atlas Copco’s new QAS 600 generator is the largest model in the QAS range. Rated at 575 kVA at 60 Hz, the QAS 600 is powered by a Volvo TAD 1641 GE diesel engine and a 239-gal. (905 L) standard fuel tank that ensures continuous operation at full load for a complete shift. With standard features that maximize safety and minimize environmental impact, the QAS 600 is designed for easy transportation and onsite handling, making it ideal for rental, industrial, public utility and construction applications where continuous power is needed, according to the manufacturer.
The QAS 600 is housed in zinc plated steel with a powder coat finish, which provides optimum resistance against corrosion. The housing also has been designed to reduce noise. The QAS 600 operates at 77 dB(A) at 60 Hz, making it ideal for operation in noise sensitive areas.
The enclosure also features an integrated lifting structure that includes forklift slots, which facilitate safe and efficient handling, and an integrated bumper to protect against impact. In addition, the integrated lifting structure is positioned at the center point of gravity for correct balancing, and is designed to support at least four times the maximum weight without breaking. The sturdy spillage-free frame is a 110-percent containment base for all the necessary liquids such as oil, coolant and fuel, offering maximum environmental protection.
The new QAS 600 features a dedicated compartment for the electrical system, making it safe to access even when operating. Isolating the electrical system from the engine compartment reduces vibration and temperature impact on the more sensitive electrical components. Furthermore, the compartment door is sealed to help prevent water and dust infiltration.
An industrial Type B-curve four-pole main circuit breaker safeguards the alternator against external short circuits by an instantaneous trip that is three to five times the nominal current. In fact, all main circuit breakers in the QAS range are omnipolar — an essential feature for compatibility with different configurations and various applications on the job site.
Critical engine parameters such as oil temperature, oil pressure and coolant temperature are monitored by means of a failsafe system. Should a sensor or transducer fail, the system automatically shuts down to avoid any damage to the engine.
Generator control, protection and monitoring are provided with the Qc1002 local or remote start digital control module. A standard feature, the system is ideal for all automatic controlled applications. All Qc controllers are equipped with external communication protocols prepared to support the Cosmos option for satellite monitoring.
Standard features on the QAS 600 make preventative maintenance and repairs faster, easier and safer. Large access doors allow easy access to all service points and generator components. External drain points are positioned to allow easy and efficient draining of oil, coolant and fuel with minimal risk to the environment.
A dual-stage fuel filter with integrated water separator and a heavy duty dual-stage air filtration system ensure longer service intervals and increased engine life and up time. An extra safety cartridge filter element allows air filter replacement during operation.
The QAS 600’s high-performance radiator with high capacity cooling also is fitted to guarantee 100-percent prime power at 60 Hz. Operation is assured in high ambient temperatures up to 104F and 3,280 ft. altitude.
Options on the QAS 600 include a Qc4002 controller that is available for multi-start paralleling operations. This controller is equipped with a power management system that enables the user to save fuel and to extend the life of the engine. In order to increase flexibility, a complete cam-lock panel also is an option. This panel provides access to the full power of the generator, a unique feature for models this size. A spark arrestor, air inlet shut-down valve and quick couplings for an external fuel tank also are available.
