Construction Equipment Guide

The new LPHB-M hydraulic posthole borer attachment from Atlas Copco Construction Tools provides a hole-digging solution for the installation of poles, piles and fences.

The LPHB-M is designed for use on mini-excavators, backhoe loaders or skid steers weighing 1 to 3 tons (.9 to 2.7 t). The borer mounts directly onto the carrier’s shovel or arm, or under an attached top plate for quick release couplings.

At a service weight of 68 lbs. (31 kg), the posthole borer delivers 332 ft.-lbs. of torque at 2,030 psi (140 bar). The unit provides adjustable rotation speeds between 80 and 200 rpm to accommodate a wide range of job requirements.

The borer attachment features a .5-in. (1.3 cm) BSP connection and accepts hydraulic oil flow from 5.3 to 15.9 gal. (20 to 60 L) per minute up to a maximum working pressure of 2,320 psi (160 bar). For use with carriers that supply slightly excessive oil flow or pressure, an optional oil flow divider can be inserted to ensure compatibility between the borer and carrier.

Six augers with interchangeable bits and tips are available, with diameters ranging from 3.5 to 13.5 in. (8.9 to 34 cm) to allow for a variety of hole sizes. An extension rod enables the LPHB-M to achieve a maximum digging depth of 4.9 ft. (1.5 m) Augers are field changeable, with no tools required.

Routine maintenance of the posthole borer and couplings is limited to cleaning after use or as necessary.

The LPHB-M posthole borer was added to Atlas Copco Construction Tools’ product line through the 2005 acquisition of Lifton, a manufacturer of hydraulic handheld breakers, power packs, cut-off saws, core drills, post drivers, water pumps and other equipment for the global construction, demolition, utility, mining and rental industries.
