Bomag has redesigned its 66- and 78-in. (167 and 198 cm) tandem drum rollers to offer improved operator ergonomics and controls, better performance, and greater economy.

The new BW266AD-4 has a maximum centrifugal force of 32,800 lbs. (14,878 kg) while the BW278AD-4 has a maximum centrifugal force of 37,100 lbs. (16,828 kg). Both feature a redesigned cockpit with sliding/swivel seat for improved operator comfort and visibility, reduced fatigue, and increased efficiency. The swivel seat makes it easy for the operator to adjust positions without switching seats, while providing a clear view of the roller drum edges.

When the seat position is reversed, the joystick controls reverse automatically for natural right/left, forward/back control. An intuitive instrument cluster provides responsive, easy-to-read feedback of machine vitals and mat conditions.

The BW266AD-4 and BW278AD-4 also offer advanced performance and control features that contribute to increased compaction results. An increase in maximum frequency to 4,000 vibrations per minute (vpm) allows the new rollers to work quickly to achieve density on Superpave mixes. The vibration frequency is infinitely variable from 2,500 to 4,000 vpm, allowing the rollers to be used in a wide variety of applications.

The rollers provide instant feedback to the operator to allow constant monitoring of amplitude, frequency, impact spacing and mat temperature. The speed limiter allows the operator to set maximum working speed while the vibration auto on/off ensures total repeatability of system settings and rolling patterns.

The new BW266AD-4 and BW278AD-4 also have advanced features that make them more economical and environmentally friendly.

The rollers are equipped with 130-hp (97 kW) Cummins QSB4.5 Tier III diesel engines featuring an ECO-Mode system that automatically matches engine speed to roller operation, idling the engine during pauses and breaks. This can reduce fuel costs by as much as 20 percent while lowering job site noise, according to the manufacturer

Additional features on the BW266AD-4 and BW278AD-4 include a single hood for easy service access from a standing position, flush-mounted ROPS/FOPS for ease of working next to walls and guard rails, block-type drum isolators, hinged scraper bars and improved optional night paving lights.

Larger water tanks on the new rollers permit longer operation between refills, while new nozzles and an interval water spray system reduce water use.
