A big job in a small space cannot be done with just any piece of machinery. So, when BOND Brothers (BOND) took on the flood mitigation project for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), the company needed to find an excavator with a very small footprint, strong lifting capacities and breakout force.
BOND has a stellar reputation, and extensive experience working in urban settings which requires specialized expertise. This expertise includes working around traffic and aging infrastructure in extremely cramped quarters. Because of BOND's extensive experience and broad knowledge base in the civil and utility marketplace, they are often brought on a project to resolve issues that have perplexed other civil contractors.
MBTA's flood mitigation project involves the construction of flood control measures at the entrance to the Green Line subway tunnel adjacent to Fenway Station. BOND is installing large steel doors at the entrance to the Green Line tunnel to protect the subway from potential future flooding. Past floods have caused in excess of $70 million in damage and have put the Green Line out of commission. The footprint for this project is tiny, trapped between active railroad tracks and the subway tunnel.
According to Shawn Hubbard, fleet manager of BOND, "Recently, we have been working on a regular basis with T-Quip Sales & Rental and their sales representative, Kevin Swartz. Kevin has developed a reputation for being able to size up the right equipment for our jobs and finding specialized pieces like rippers and hammers to meet our needs."
In this case, T-Quip sent BOND a Komatsu PC308 zero tail swing excavator.
"Zero tail swing was critical for us. We didn't want any portion of the machine to exceed the tiny footprint of our job site. However, the machine had to have good reach and good lifting capacity to put steel sheets in place for our excavation. Kevin was able to provide us with a ripper attachment for times when we needed to break through some challenging digging situations."
When asked about how BOND manages its rental fleet, Hubbard said "We look carefully at our past equipment utilization and at the projects we have extended out over the next few years. We buy pieces of equipment to be added to our fleet that we know will be used regularly enough to give us a return on our investment. However, it is common to have needs for specialized machines above and beyond what our fleet can provide and that is where the services of T-Quip Sales & Rental are vital to us.
"T-Quip Sales & Rental has a significant inventory of common machines and specialized pieces of equipment, and the nice thing about working with Kevin Swartz is that he knows exactly how to match up those machines with our needs. On the rare occasion that he does not have what we need, he will go to great extent to find it, and every machine that he has delivered to our site is like new."
