Caterpillar Industrial Power Systems announced the availability of the Cat C3.6 industrial diesel engine. The powerful 134 hp (100 kW) engine meets EU Stage V / U.S. EPA Tier IV Final nonroad emission standards and features 406 lb.-ft of torque at 1,500 rpm (550 Nm at 1,500 rpm).

With its smaller package and compact design, the C3.6 helps original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) save significant powertrain installation costs while still providing 5 percent increase in power density and 12 percent increase in torque than its predecessor engine, the C3.4. That's because the new engine's smaller package features flexible aftertreatment solutions that provide original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with a simplified installation process that also reduces integration costs, according to the manufacturer.

"We wanted to create an engine with customizable aftertreatment that allows OEMs to minimize installation costs while also providing maximum efficiency from the engine," said Caterpillar Product Marketing Manager Alex Eden. "Technology features such as controllable turbocharging have made it possible to create a smaller engine with the response that would be expected from a much larger product. The torque at low speed, which is critical for machine drivability, is particularly impressive."

Customers will enjoy the benefits of lower owning and operating costs with the C3.6 due to an overall decrease in fluid consumption, including a 6 to 10 percent decrease in diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) consumption when compared to the C3.4.

The C3.6 also is backed by the Cat dealer network.

"Our dealers take great pride in providing customers the solutions they require," said Brian Tomsovic, global dealer operations manager. "The dealers are dedicated to truly understanding the challenges OEMs and customers face and creating solutions that meet or exceed their expectations requires a high level of expertise."

The Cat 3.6 dual-certified, engine is distributed, sold and supported through the worldwide Cat dealer network with trained technicians to ensure service support is never out of reach.
