The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor partner, Martin Marietta Construction, began work to repair 2 mi. of roadway surface on 6th Avenue (CO 30), from Potomac Street to North Airport Boulevard in Aurora. Two bridges within the corridor also will be repaired and 49 curb ramps will be upgraded.

"Both CDOT and Martin Marietta are pleased to get this project under way," said Paul Jesaitis, CDOT Region 1 transportation director. "This section of roadway has met its lifespan expectancy and is showing signs of failure. It is important to CDOT to get roads like this back into a state that will improve overall safety and comfort for motorists travelling through the corridor."

The goal of this project is to ensure that the impact on the traveling public is minimal.

Traffic Impacts

The majority of work will be performed at night, between the hours of 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Concrete curb and gutter work will be performed during the day. Some weekend work may be necessary.

This project consists of removing and replacing 2.5 in. of asphalt on 6th Avenue, from North Airport Boulevard to Potomac Street, in both directions. After milling is complete, areas of the road in need of full depth restoration will be identified by field personnel. Damaged areas will then be excavated to a depth of 6 in. below the asphalt and reconstructed with 6 in. of road-base and a layer of asphalt. In addition, 6th Avenue will receive new roadway markings and signage.

Structural improvements will occur at the 6th Avenue box culvert over High Line Canal and the 6th Avenue bridge over Toll Gate Creek. Both structures will be milled down to the bare deck and inspected for concrete in need of repair.

Weakened concrete will be removed and patching materials will be applied. The structures will then be waterproofed and paved with asphalt. These repairs are necessary in order to prevent corrosion and degradation of the structures' concrete.

Additionally, 49 existing curb ramps will be reconstructed and brought into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Project completion is expected by the end of summer 2017. All work is weather dependent and schedules are subject to change.
