Clark to Build $46M Residence Hall for George Washington University in D.C.

The George Washington University is in the midst of its largest capital improvement campaign in the past 20 years. The university’s latest project is a 10-story, 319,000-sq.-ft. (29,636 sq m) student residence hall with underground parking. Featuring 193 one- and two-bedroom apartment units, the facility will accommodate more than 700 students. Clark Residential, a subsidiary of The Clark Construction Group Inc., of Bethesda, MD, is serving as the construction manager on this $46-million project.

“We have a facility with 700-plus beds and two levels of parking containing 88 spaces,” said The George Washington University Executive Director of Facilities Roger Lyons. “It will have retail venues and a market on the lower level.”

The new student residence will be built on a vacant site bounded by 23rd Street, G Street and Virginia Avenue northwest and will be the first campus building visible to those traveling north on 23rd Street. Designed by Ayers/Saint/Gross of Washington, D.C., the facility will complement the surrounding neighborhood architecture with a facade featuring a traditional composition of brick, stone, and precast concrete.

Each of the 193 units will include a furnished living room, full kitchen and full bath off each bedroom. Residents also will enjoy a study lounge on each floor. Additional amenities include a community room, computer lab, and a 10,000-sq.-ft. (929 sq m) food court on the ground and lower level.

Tadjer Cohen Edelson of Silver Spring, MD, is serving as the structural engineer. The Engineering Design Group Inc., of Washington, D.C., was awarded the mechanical/electrical design contract. The project is scheduled for completion and occupancy for the fall semester of 2004.
