The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will provide $25 million in emergency funding to help repair Texas roads, bridges and highways damaged by Hurricane Harvey.

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao told the FHWA Aug. 29 to immediately provide the emergency relief funds to Texas after the state asked for them. The request came as officials in Houston saw that local roads and bridges had begun buckling under the weight of the floodwaters, The Hill reported.

In a statement, Chao said, "I have mobilized the Department of Transportation to provide whatever assistance Texas requires to restore the state's transportation systems. The funding provided today will help the state to act immediately and represents the beginning of our commitment to help repair Texas' affected infrastructure."

According to FHWA, the agency will be working with local, state and federal officials provide aid to those areas affected by Harvey.
