PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) A Connecticut construction company working to rebuild the southbound bridge section of the Providence Viaduct on Route 95 is suing the state for breach of contract.

The Providence Journal reported the suit filed in September says Manafort Brothers Inc. is asking the state for damages “in excess of $4 million' for extra work the company performed as the project fell behind schedule.

The project started in 2013 and was expected to end last year. Manafort had signed a $66.8 million contract but the Department of Transportation's most recent quarterly report estimates construction costs will total $74.4 million.

DOT spokesman Charles St. Martin said the report pegs the initial estimated cost at $68.9 million.

The state has paid Manafort $64.1 million as of Sept. 30.

It countersued in October.
