Work is scheduled to begin on the $86.1 million construction project on SL 224/U.S. 59 that is designed to construct a four-lane direct connector from SH 7 West to 1.2 mi. south of Spradley Street. The work will include grading, subgrade treatments, concrete paving, asphalt, bridge structures including bridge pilings, utilities, illumination, signage and pavement markings.

The project is designed to eliminate traffic conflicts and improve safety and mobility with the construction of new U.S. 59 southbound and northbound main lanes that will directly connect to SL 224, just south of SH 7, extend over the SL 224/U.S. 59 South intersection and connect back to U.S. 59, just south of Spradley Street. Along with the direct connector bridge, the project includes overpasses to be constructed at Spradley Street, U.S. 59 and Old Lufkin Road. New frontage roads will be constructed along SL 224 between SH 7 and BU 59 and along U.S. 59 between Spradley Street and Old Lufkin Road.

Longview Bridge and Road, Longview, Tex., will serve as general contractor for the project that is scheduled to be completed in four years, weather permitting.

"We are excited to be starting this long anticipated project in Nacogdoches County," said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer of the Lufkin District.
