They say everything is bigger in Texas — and when you purchase a house on a hillside, you are expecting a grand view as well. However, the rocky hills and canyons of Texas pose many challenges to land clearing equipment. Hard-to-reach spots, large boulders, unstable soil and other unique obstacles can make clearing a tricky job to tackle.

Chastan McRae is co-owner of Petro Swift LLC, located in Kerrville, Texas. Chastan and his brother, Travis, have been clearing the hills for private and government construction projects for more than six years. McRae and his team approach every project with absolute dedication and integrity, delivering the best value to their customers. With three generations of land management and excavation expertise, the McRae family always goes the extra mile to ensure customers' satisfaction.

So, what is the best way to clear out a steep, rocky hill?

"We drastically improved our efficiency by switching from dozers to loaders and excavators with mulching attachments. This method cuts our time in half and allows us to work on very steep areas," said McRae. "Our go-to combination is Barko carriers with FAE mulching attachments. Between exceptional stability of Barko and high-productivity of FAE, we easily clear and maintain hills, ponds, pipelines, hunting areas. We do not need to worry about rolling down the hill and can take care of the steepest areas. Depending on the volume of vegetation and the complexity of the lot, we can clear up to five miles a day."

Mulching takes care of material in an efficient and environmentally responsible way. You do not need to haul away the brush and trees or to burn them. This saves time, resources and decreases the carbon footprint. Besides, mulching can help soil stabilization and slow down the erosion. Also, mulching adds that well-maintained feel to any property.

According to McRae, FAE equipment has always been their top choice for mulching jobs.

"An FAE mulching attachment was one of the first ones we ever bought, and since then, we keep adding them to our fleet," he said. "We now have five FAE mulchers. The oldest one has more than 3,000 hours on it, and it works as good as new. Those machines hold value and have better design compared to the competition. Once you pair an FAE attachment with a great carrier like Barko — you are unstoppable. Another thing that sets them apart is constant improvement and customization to customer's environment. The machines we purchase are specifically designed for the Texas landscape, which is very different from, for example, Florida. Also, you can see drastic changes from older models to current ones. FAE takes customers' feedback seriously and continuously improve their products. This makes our job so much easier."
