On May 21, crews started work that will reinforce a fault (rock slip) on Colorado Highway 133, on the south side of McClure Pass. Work on this $1.3 million project is expected to be complete in mid-October, weather permitting.

Work will stabilize and reinforce a landslide below the highway to reduce further slipping or future rockslides. Specifically, crews will:

  • Excavate about 3,750 tons (or 3,000 cu. yds.) of rock;
  • drill about 18, 60-ft.-deep caissons, into which they'll position vertical and horizontal reinforcing supports (rebar cages);
  • install 24-in.-diameter rebar cages — circular sets of 18, 60-ft.-long sections of rebar;
  • build a tieback system, which incorporates high-strength steel-strand anchors that are grouted in-place to anchor the vertical caissons;
  • repair and rebuild the road;
  • complete earthwork and erosion control measures; and
  • stripe and add signs.
Travel Impacts

Through mid-October 2018:

  • Work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday;
  • single-lane, alternating travel through the work zone with periodic traffic holds of up to 15 minutes;
  • delays exceeding 15 minutes;
  • expect a 10-ft. width restriction; and
  • avoid distractions when driving through the work zone and go slow
Adjacent Work

This summer/fall, there will be two projects underway on CO 133:

CO 133 Bowie Resurfacing & Bridge Repair — crews on this $2.6 million project will repave more than 12 mi. of Colorado Highway 133 within Delta and Gunnison counties. Work begins about 12 mi. east of Hotchkiss and extends to Kebler Pass at Gunnison County Road 12.

This project begins April 23 and is due to complete Sept. 30, 2018. The project affects mile points 11.43 to 23.8, further south.

CO 133 McClure Pass to Redstone Resurfacing — Crews on this $2.5 million project will resurface almost 9 mi. of Colorado Highway 133 within Gunnison and Pitkin counties. Work begins at McClure Pass and extends to the town of Redstone.

In addition to extending the life of the highway, sections of guardrail in the project area will be upgraded. The project begins in May and is due to complete in September 2018. The project affects mile points 43 to 50, north of the slip project.
