Construction Equipment Guide

A deep excavation, tight urban site surrounded by neighboring buildings and a major commuter route were among the challenges facing The Clark Construction Group Inc. at the 386,000-sq.-ft. (34,740 sq m) Bethesda Place II in Bethesda, MD. Owned by Bethesda Place II LP (comprised of principals of Polinger, Shannon & Luchs and The Tower Companies), the project complements the existing, adjacent 11-story Bethesda Place building completed by Clark Construction in 1990.

Located on a prominent 38,000-sq.-ft. (3,420 sq m) site, the 11-story Bethesda Place II includes six below-grade levels. Close logistical coordination was required due to the restricted site and the project team had to ensure minimal disruptions to existing occupied buildings.

Designed by Kishimoto.Gordon PC of McLean, VA, Bethesda Place II reflects the design of Bethesda Place I. A full-length curtain wall is incorporated into the facade, which is clad with similar horizontal spandrels of architectural precast concrete and glass. A two-story lobby featuring natural stone and millwork highlights the interior. Located at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Commerce Lane in the heart of Bethesda, a pedestrian plaza lends a human scale to the streetscape.

In addition to Clark and the architect, the project team includes SK & A of Rockville, MD, structural engineer; TOLK Inc. of Fairfax, VA, mechanical/electrical/plumbing engineer; Loiderman Associates Inc. of Rockville, MD, civil engineer; and Oldham & Partners of Washington, D.C., architect assisting with working drawings and project administration.

The Clark Construction Group Inc. is headquartered in Bethesda, MD.
