In spring 2011, residents of New Rochelle, N.Y., will be tossing around the pigskin in a newly renovated football field in Flower (City) Park known as Fosina Field.

The park, located on Fifth and Potter avenues on the east side of the city, is an active 20 acre park, which houses three ball fields, a basketball court, playground, picnic area for rent, Sidney E. Frank Stake Park, Fosina Stadium and the Skidelsky Field Complex.

This $2.4 million project, which was started on July 16, 2010, is quite extensive. A new Astroturf playing surface will be installed, so a considerable amount of drainage needs to be installed. Curbing is being created around the entire perimeter of the playing field and the playing surface is being elevated to be level with the raised curbing.

The project also involves installation of a scoreboard and lights for the field to accommodate night games.

All city sewer utility lines including gas and sewer are being excavated and reinstalled. On the playing field itself, 8 in. of graded finishing stone is being laid down to support the 2 in. of Astroturf that completes the playing surface.

Dan DiMarino, president of DiMarino Brothers Inc., Mount Vernon, N.Y., and his brother Vito DiMarino Jr., are the general contractors working on the project.

In a largely unused adjoining area of the park, DiMarino has set up a topsoil and aggregate recycling operation. Using an Extec portable tracked screening plant being fed by several excavators and loaders, thousands of yards of aggregate and topsoil are being produced from two piles of mixed excavated materials that are more than 30 ft. high.

Much of the topsoil and Item no. 4 aggregate that is being produced is being re-used in the construction of the football field. Some of the material is being shipped out to Main Street, New Rochelle, for use on a sidewalk and curbing project; and yet still more product is being resold to area contractors and municipalities.

The piles of mixed excavated materials came from excavation that was being done so that the city of New Rochelle can construct two clay baseball fields that also will be included in the New Rochelle City Park area, along with a new playground that is being planned.

DiMarino owns a fleet of approximately 20 earthmoving machines, purchased almost entirely from Westchester Tractor in Brewster, N.Y. John Apple, president of Westchester Tractor, has supplied DiMarino with New Holland, Kobelco, Kubota and Volvo equipment.

“Working with John Apple and Westchester Tractor is very convenient for us. He is located close to our facilities and he always has a large inventory for us to select from; and if they don’t have what we need, he finds it,” said Dan DiMarino.

“His equipment is priced very competitively and every piece of equipment that we have purchased from Westchester Tractor has performed up to our expectations.”

Some of the equipment DiMarino Brothers purchased from Westchester Tractor goes back a while, has racked up quite a few hours, and is still operating as a part of its fleet, including a Fiat FD7 dozer purchased in 1987.

“Westchester Tractor has always given us great support,” said Dan DiMarino.

“Our dad started doing business with Westchester Tractor many years ago. We still have in our yard one of the old time tractor loader backhoes that was literally an old blue Ford 4000 agricultural tractor with a loader mounted to the front end and a backhoe attachment on the rear. With the support of Westchester Tractor that piece of equipment gave us many, many years of service.

“A few years ago we started purchasing Kubota mini excavators from Westchester Tractor. They are perfect for the utility work that we get involved with, particularly in urban areas. We have equipped these excavators with thumbs, grapples and back blades; and they give us wonderful performance and perform in very tight spots. We have recently purchased a new Volvo EC160 excavator and New Holland LS180 skid steers, which have also proven to be very reliable machines.”
