The Wyoming Department of Transportation has awarded a $33 million contract for work that will widen and add other improvements to Highway 89 south of Jackson.

The Jackson South project, scheduled to begin this summer, is divided into north and south portions. The contract awarded last week to Wadsworth Brothers Construction Co., of Utah, is for the north section, from near the WYDOT shops at Hog Island to the southern intersection of the highway with South Park Loop Road. The work will cover about 4 miles of the highway.

The focus of the work will be widening the highway to five lanes, with two lanes for traffic in both directions and a center turn lane. Also planned is replacing the bridges at Flat Creek and the Snake River, building turnouts, and adding a pedestrian and bike pathway. The plan also includes installing a wildlife underpass and building wildlife fencing.

A WYDOT summary said the road widening “will resolve existing roadway deficiencies while safely and efficiently accommodating increased traffic volumes and improving system linkage.”

Work on the south section is scheduled for 2019.
