Eaton’s Electrical Group Headquarters Expansion Marks Fulfillment of Plans

Eaton Corp. planned for future expansion when it commissioned a 140,000 sq.-ft. (13,006 sq m) office facility for its Moon Township’s Cherrington Corporate Center in the late 1990s. Design-built by Clayco, the two-wing facility was just the first phase of Eaton’s Electrical Group headquarters.

Clayco’s Chicago office is now working with Eaton on the expansion and completion of its second plan for the building.

The existing structure, which consists of two wings extending from a central hub, will be expanded to include two new wings linking to the same central lobby area. From an aerial view, the building will resemble the shape of a large “X.” The team began construction on the 120,000-sq.-ft. (11,148 sq m) expansion in August 2007.

Like the existing two wings, the three-story expansion wings are being constructed of brick and glass, creating a striking landmark near the Pittsburgh Airport. The first floor will provide 39,000 sq. ft. (3,623 sq m) of new product development area and an executive briefing center, while the second and third floors will include general offices and further development areas. New amenities will include an expanded cafeteria and additional site improvements and parking.

“We are pursuing silver certification in the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System,” said Chad Derus, Clayco’s project manager. “We also are doubling the size of the cafeteria, adding new options and redesigning the layout of the cafe/serving area.”

According to Derus, green elements being incorporated into the Eaton expansion include 13 Eaton products that conserve energy, improve indoor air quality and provide unique features such as daylight harvesting associated with Eaton Electrical Group’s POW R Command lighting control system.

“This new facility, including the Executive Briefing Center, will provide an educational outreach program to demonstrate the application of our products in green buildings,” said John White, energy management and environmental solutions manager of Eaton.

M+H Architects Inc., formerly Mitchell + Hugeback Architects Inc., is the architect for the project, which is scheduled for completion in August 2008.

Clayco’s project team includes Derus; Tom Sieckhaus and Steve Sieckhaus, project executives; Brad Cvengros, project director; Peter Abromowitz, project estimator; Frank Wiza, project superintendent; Justin Holland, project engineer; and Gary Marrin, operations manager. Joining Clayco and M+H Architects on the project are O’Toole Design Associates, interior designer; Stock & Associates Inc., civil engineer; and Alper Audi Inc., structural engineer.
