When Wendell Barnes decided to close his business, Wendell’s Welding, his wife Lisa mentioned it to one of her co-workers. When the co-worker went home, she mentioned it to her husband, and such starts the story of how Custom Conveyors began.
“I was in the process of selling the company I was working for and knew at the time the new owners would probably want to bring in their own management team,” said Ed Kus.
After spending six years managing a construction company and 15 years of management experience in manufacturing, “I decided I was done working for others,” Kus added.
Kus and Barnes set up a meeting to talk about the business and its potential.
“After the meeting with Wendell, I knew this was a business that Wendell should not close. I told him, with my business background, including a degree in accounting and an MBA from Nichols College, I could run his business for him and if what he told me was true, I would buy the business from him”
Kus did just that in 2006.
Currently located in a 20,000 sq. ft. facility in North Oxford, Mass., Custom Conveyors has nine employees, including Kus’s son Eddie, who is in charge of production. Barnes, who had been building conveyors for more than 15 years, remains a part of the business.
“We service the aggregate, wood chip manufacturers, metal recycling, aggregate recycling, glass recycling and trash recycling industries,” Kus said. “Sixty percent of our business is in radial stacking conveyors for the sand and stone producers. The number one selling unit is the 36 by 60 diesel hydraulic self contained stacker,” Kus said.
The company also offers jump conveyors, overland conveyors, static conveyors and screw conveyors from 5 to 500 ft. (1.5 to 152 m) and has electric, hydraulic and self-contained diesel hydraulic power.
Custom Conveyors has full fabrication capabilities and produces various bins and feed hoppers. The company carries a full inventory of conveyor replacement parts, including Superior, Precision, Goodman, CCI, Dodge Gear Reducers, Baldor motors and belting, and a wide assortment of used parts, including idlers and gear boxes
“We offer end users a complete package on fabrication possibilities that complement the conveyors line and have our own in-house hydraulic department that can service a customer’s hydraulic needs quickly,” Kus added.
In 2007, Rampco Construction, a Massachusetts crushing operation, decided to completely overhaul its crushing operation. After looking at all the conveyor manufacturers, Rampco chose Custom Conveyors.
“The quality and value was the best we found and we are extremely happy with our choice,” said Richard Androwelicz, president of Rampco.
Rampco purchased four radial stackers for the static plant, and one diesel hydraulic unit for its portable crushing operation.
Units are shipped all across the country, including as far away as California.
Current dealers include Milton CAT, ACE Equipment, Baschmann Services and Upstate Screens and Crushers.
