Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) and Generac Power Systems Inc., a manufacturer of standby and portable power generation equipment, have announced a strategic partnership. Beginning in 2010, FPT will supply Generac with a wide range of industrial diesel engines for use in gensets with outputs ranging from 60 to 350 kilowatts (kW). The FPT engines will help increase productivity and greatly reduce engine operating costs, according to the manufacturer.

FPT engines for power generation benefit from advanced technologies in numerous applications encompassing construction equipment, agriculture and commercial vehicles as well as passenger automobiles. Key attributes include high performance and compactness, combined with low operating costs and minimal environmental impact.

The engines require 37 percent less oil than competitors’ average and feature 600-hour oil and filter change intervals, which is 20 percent better than competitors’ average, according to the manufacturer.

The high power density provided by turbocharging and enhanced injection systems, such as the FPT second generation Electronic Common Rail, allows performance normally achievable only with bigger size engines.

FPT engines are able to meet customer requirements for performance, operating cost and ease of installation and service.

“FPT engines have many superior technology and performance advantages that Generac seeks to utilize in its gensets,” stated Allen Gillette, senior vice president, engineering, Generac. “Using FPT engines will enable us to offer our customers superior products and technology. In addition, as FPT products are developed to reduce engine emissions while improving fuel consumption, they will aid Generac in continuing to meet the new exhaust emissions standards required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and providing the most innovative engine technologies on the market today.”

“This agreement with Generac, a leading company in power generation systems, is a further recognition of FPT’s capability to provide genuine value to our customers thanks to the most innovative technologies that we have developed and made available in all markets for all different kinds of applications, from passengers cars to industrial engines,” added Massimo Rubatto, sales and marketing vice president, FPT.
