Finkbiner Aids Superior Asphalt in Increasing Efficiency

A forty year relationship pays off with big results.

Asphalt is the number one recyclable product in the world and Superior Asphalt, North Aurora, Ill., is well aware of this.

So when the company was looking to increase its efficiency, brothers and co-owners John, president, and Mike Bryan, vice president, turned to a dealer they’ve been working with for more than 40 years, Finkbiner Equipment, located just outside of Chicago in Burr Ridge, Ill.

“We had a FRAP screening plant we have been operating for the last three years that just wasn’t getting the capacity we desired. So we contacted Chad (Finkbiner sales representative) and they showed us this machine,” said Mike, of the Inertia (Dual) Spec Pro.

Superior Asphalt purchased an Inertia (Dual) Spec Pro II, which is being fed by an Inertia 5066 HSI (Horizontal Shaft Impactor) Crusher that also was purchased. Screens are a 6 by 18 ft. (1.9 by 5.5 m) two-deck screen with “high frequency” electric vibratory motors. This system allows the smaller products (1/2 by 1/4 in. and 3/16 in. minus) being screened to be separated more efficiently than a conventional screening plant. If done properly, the material may then be implemented back into the new asphalt at a higher capacity, because you can control the amount of each product separately.

Before purchasing the Inertia screen, Superior Asphalt was running two shifts.

“We had a job that we did three years ago and it increased our capacity of the hot mix going out, so we had to run in two shifts to keep up with our FRAP needs. We are running the new one two or three days a week and it is keeping up with that same hot mix capacity. We are very pleased with the output,” said Mike.

Now, the company is saving more than 50 gal. of diesel a day, able to make 425 tons (386 t) per hour or more of Fractioned Reclaimed Asphaltic Pavement (FRAP) with the Inertia (Dual) Spec Pro II. The overhead cost has been decreased by more than half by being able to do it with the guys out there in an eight-hour day.

“In our private mixes, we do more than what the state allows. By fractioning the RAP and adding RAS, recycled asphalt shingles, with it, allows us to increase our recyclability,” said Mike. “We probably recycle over 100,000 tons of material a year.”

On Finkbiner Equipment, Mike said, “They are outstanding with the timing, of getting the machine here. Their assistance with the set up is second to none. They have been not only a great dealer but a great friend for many years.”

Started in 1926, Geneva Construction Company is a full-service asphalt paving company, which also performs curb and gutter and concrete flat work. Its 450-ton (408 t) asphalt plant (with 1,300 tons [1,179 t] of storage) is located in North Aurora under the name of Superior Asphalt Materials. “SAM” supplies various hot mix asphalt mixes, crushed concrete of various gradations, asphalt grindings, and bituminous prime.
