On Dec. 5, 2012, 65 guests and Foley staff assembled for a dinner and presentation to learn about the benefits of a Cat Certified Rebuild. Customer support representatives, certified rebuild technicians and other supporting staff were on hand, including Mariann Cliff, product support technology consultant who had a table set up to talk about Product Link. Product Link enables comprehensive and flexible remote monitoring, asset tracking, maintenance management and more.

Caterpillar Certified Rebuild Specialist Philip L. Ringenberger presented the different types of rebuild programs and explained what Foley and Caterpillar can offer in support of these programs. He showed different types of machines that were rebuilt and presented concrete examples of customer benefits and savings.

Foley then showed a video testimonial that it created after interviewing Bill Gannon, general manager of All American Recycling Corp., a Jersey City, N.J., family owned business with a history of close to 100 years of experience in the recycling field.

Gannon’s video testimonial tells the story of how he and his Customer Support Representative, Eric Cliff, changed the company’s maintenance philosophy to “repair before failure” by putting a preventive maintenance program in place.

Certified Rebuild Walk-Around

Pete Policastro ushered everyone to the back of the shop where the certified rebuilds are performed, and stood in front of a 950E wheel loader that was in the process of being rebuilt. He went through the detailed Foley process that includes the parts, service and shop working together to efficiently pull apart and rebuild the machine. He then answered questions from the crowd.

The Cat Certified Rebuild begins with the complete disassembly of?the machine. The engine, fuel system, transmission, torque converter, differential, final drives and radiator are inspected, reconditioned and updated; before installation, each component is thoroughly bench-tested. All hoses, belts, seals, gaskets, bearings, knobs, switches and gauges are replaced along with wiring harnesses, wiring and approximately 7,000 other parts and components. Critical torques, clearances and pressure settings are maintained and recorded.

The machine is then ready for a crucial step — engineering updates. This stage includes incorporating improvements that have been made to the model since the original manufacturing.

Some of the routine performance testing includes turbocharger boost, throttle response, stall speed rpm, transmission and steering clutch response, and hydraulic and pilot relief valve pressures. Once the machine has been thoroughly tested, it receives a complete paint job, new model identity graphics and a Cat Certified Rebuild decal. A new serial number identifies the machine and entitles the owner to a like-new warranty, verifying the Cat rebuild process executed at Foley Inc.
