The West Harris Regional Water Authority (WHRWA) in conjuction with its partner the North Fort Bend Water Authority (NFBWA), has awarded the first Surface Water Supply Program contract to Garney Companies Inc.

The nearly $7 million project will create a 42-in. water line of roughly 10,700 linear ft. as part of the larger project to build what will be an almost 40-mi. pipeline that will carry water from Lake Houston to west Harris County and north Fort Bend county. The project in its entirety will cost approximately $680 million. Construction is due to begin in early 2020.

The Surface Water Supply Program was necessitated by the steady growth in the region, growth which is expected to reach 9.2 million residents in the next 10 years.

In addition, the project will enable the WHRWA and NFBWA to meet groundwater reduction requirements set forth by the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District and the Fort Bend Subsidence District. The cost of the project is being split between the two companies.

Later parts of the project include expanding Houston's northeast purification plant, building transmission lines from the Surface Water Supply Program pipelines to serve customers in the district and transferring water from the Trinity River to Lake Houston. The total for the surface water conversion portion of the project is $1.8 billion. CEG
