GDOT Heads Up SR I-275/SR 407 Resurfacing Project

Near Atlanta, a resurfacing project headed by the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) is well under way and scheduled for completion on Dec. 31.

The $10,898,313 contract was awarded to E.R. Snell Contractor Inc., Snellville, Ga., and is funded by the state. It involves I-285/SR-407 at Ashford Dunwoody Road (CR 1764), extending to Chamblee-Tucker Road. It also includes bridge decking and joint seals.

According to Mark D. McKinnon, Atlanta regional media coordinator of Georgia DOT, notice to proceed was given on May 24, 2011, but the contractor did not begin work until July 7.

He noted that DOT project personnel includes eight people. The contractor also will have a milling crew with six people and an asphalt paving crew with 11 people and 24 dump truck operators to start. Work will be completed on one lane first.

“The project is unique in the fact that it involves micro-milling of one-and-one-quarter inches of asphalt to provide a texture suitable for use as a temporary riding surface or immediate overlay,” McKinnon said. “This surface can be left unpaved for one day. This has never been done on an interstate project before. The micro-milled area has to be completely cleaned of dust, residue, and loose milled material and pass a ridge valley target of one -sixteenth-inch on the riding surface. This will require micro milling 521,500 square yards on the interstate roadway, milling of 130,394 square yards on interstate ramps, and 36,000 tons of asphalt.”

The major subcontractor is the Miller Group of Morrow, Ga. It is currently working on 11 GDOT projects in Bryan, Chatham, Fulton, Richmond, Glynn, Baldwin, DeKalb, Wilkinson and Berrien counties. These projects all consist of asphalt milling and resurfacing. It also recently completed a micro-milling project in Troup County. CEG
