Grove RT540E Overhauled in Record Time by Manitowoc Team in Brazil

Manitowoc's team in Brazil overhauled a Grove RT540E crane in just 12 days for a construction company in Sao Paulo. The EnCORE refurbishment included repairs, replacements, a new paint job and an upgraded control system, offering significant cost savings compared to purchasing a new crane. The demand for pre-owned cranes is rising in Brazil, leading Manitowoc to expand its EnCORE services in the region.

After 12 days of intensive work, a team of experts from Manitowoc in Brazil completed the overhaul of a Grove RT540E rough-terrain crane.

The used machine, which had been part of a crane rental fleet in the state of Rio Grande do Sul since 2012, had already been sold to a construction company in Sao Paulo — and the buyers were in a hurry.

"The sale of this used RT540E was finalized almost immediately after we announced it would be in our inventory," said Roberto Ota, regional business manager of Manitowoc Brazil. "The buyer already had a project scheduled to begin and needed the crane. It was going to be just two weeks after the crane left the previous owner's yard, so the overhaul had to be completed in a very short amount of time. Our experienced team delivered and finished the job in record time."

Manitowoc's EnCORE team made repairs to the crane's hydraulic cylinders, wiring harness and engine. Displays and upholstery were replaced. The machine also received a fresh coat of paint and a crane control system upgrade. The final cost was about 40 percent of the price of a new crane of the same capacity and included a new manufacturer's warranty.

The Grove RT540E has a 35 ton capacity. It features a four-section main boom extending to 101 ft., along with an optional telescoping jib ranging from 26 ft. to 45 ft., providing a maximum tip height of up to 154 ft. It is known for its versatility and agility in tighter workspaces, according to the company.

Luciano Dias, director of sales and product support of Manitowoc Brazil, explained that the country's pre-owned crane market is heating up, leading to a significant increase in demand for EnCORE services across the region. To keep pace, Manitowoc is expanding its team of trained technicians and strengthening its parts inventory.

"We listened to our customers' needs to make it easier for them to access used cranes to maximize their return on invested capital," Dias said. "This RT540E, for example, was traded into Manitowoc as part of the down payment for two higher-capacity Grove cranes — a brand-new GMK6450-1 and a used GMK5250L. By offering this flexibility, we support customers looking to invest in new equipment while also growing the availability of pre-owned cranes in the market."
