Hackling Inc., a Connecticut demolition and site construction company has utilized two Samsung SE 210s and a Parker tracked jaw crusher for its two recent projects.
According to Robert Hackling, president of Hackling Inc., the company has been renting the Parker tracked jaw crusher with a radio remote control.
The project that the company is currently working on involved the demolition of the East Hartford Plaza on Main Street in East Hartford, CT.
On this site, a total of five buildings will come down. This totals more than 16,723 square meters (180,000 sq. ft.) of demolition. An excess of 15,291 cubic meters (20,000 cu. yds.) of concrete will be recycled on site by Hackling Inc. using the Parker crusher.
Previous to the Hartford Mall project, Hackling recently completed the demolition of two apartment complexes for the town of East Hartford. Destruction of these two buildings generated more than 11,468 cubic meters (15,000 cu. yds.) of recycled concrete which was crushed on site using the Parker machine. All the materials were reduced to 9 centimeters (3.5 in.) minus and used for backfill on site.
At this particular job, the crushed material had to pass state department of transportation requirements which the Parker achieved effortlessly, according to Hackling.
On this site he was particularly satisfied with the performance of the machine. “The Parker was small and mobile enough to keep us working at peak efficiency in very tight quarters. As an added bonus, the machine was very quiet, which was particularly helpful in a residential area. The watering system kept the dust to a minimum. We were in and out of the job with virtually no complaints from area residents,” Hackling said.
He is thrilled with both the performance and the economics of renting the Parker crusher from F & W Equipment. If he had to haul the 11,468 cubic meters (15,000 cu. yds.) of concrete off the site, the disposal alone would have cost him $2/yard, plus tracking. Then Hackling would have had to purchase materials and have them hauled back to the site to use for backfill at a cost of $8-10/yard.
According to Hackling, the total savings generated by the Parker crusher greatly exceeded the cost of the rental.
“This is a very low maintenance machine. When we pull into a site all we really have to do is grease it, set it up and we’re ready to operate in about a half hour,” he said.
Compared to a trailer-mounted unit, the Parker tracked crusher saves the company a tremendous amount of time, Hackling added.
“The machine comes to the pile that we are crushing, eliminating the need for a loader and operator to bring the materials to the crusher. As we crush the concrete, we make every effort to remove the rebar, however you can never get it all. The magnet on the main discharge conveyor of the Parker removes any rebar that we might have missed. The Parker is a real time saver. Using this machine, we were in and out of the mall project in about five weeks,” he said.
Hackling also is pleased with the Samsung SE 210s.
“We have been doing business with F & W since our conception in 1993. When we were looking for an excavator with a grapple that we could get into with a relatively easy rental purchase program, F & W put the strongest package together for us. The Samsung is very quick and very strong. We have other excavators in the same size category in our fleet, yet none of them are anywhere near as strong as the Samsung,” he said.
The Samsung has operated for more than 1,600 hours in the last 11 months with no downtime, he said.
“Believe me, our operators argue over who gets to use the Samsung each day… Our contractors are particularly impressed with how quiet the cab is,” Hackling said.
The company, he said, has had a great experience renting equipment from F & W Equipment.
“They are very easy to deal with. Sometimes you get the feeling that the larger dealers don’t care about or relate to the needs of smaller operators. F & W has always treated us like we are a very important customer. But it’s more than just that. They have a great inventory of parts. If they don’t have what we need sitting on their shelf, they have it in our hands the next day. Their service department is exceptional. Steve Funk has never let us down,” Hackling said.
Hackling Inc. was founded in 1993 to do street reconstruction including sidewalks, paving and general street work. In 1994, the company expanded into demolition. At the time, Hackling viewed demolition work as being less labor intensive and less competitive.
Currently, Hackling’s fleet includes a Samsung 210, which he recently purchased from F & W Equipment; and another Samsung 210, which he rented from the corporation. Additionally, the fleet includes three other excavators, a crawler loader and a Case 921 rubber tire loader.
In addition to demolition, Hackling Inc., also does site excavation, tank removal and asbestos abatement. The company has shown extraordinary growth over the last several years. “We give our customers good value and deal with all of our customers honestly. That has resulted in a tremendous amount of repeat business.”
