Construction Equipment Guide

Hamm Compactors of Irving, TX, recently announced four new double-drum, articulated, vibratory rollers for highway and heavy construction contractors. The HD Series is comprised of the HD 70, HD 75, HD 90 and HD 110 models.

These machines were designed on Hamm technology used in Europe for decades to compact mix designs such as Stone Matrix Asphalt and Open Friction Course, and will prove useful in meeting the Superpave specs here in the United States. Other features include a low center of gravity which provides a smooth ride, curb clearance of 78.7 centimeters (31 in.) and 8.9 centimeters (3.5 in.) offset to either side for pinching joints.

The operator’s compartment has several features such as the 180-degree swing around and swiveling seat, which prevents neck strain and provides views of the outer edges of the drums. There are joystick controls on both the left and right sides of the seat which operate the most important functions of the machine like direction, speed and vibration.

Operator work area visibility of 7.6 by 7.6 centimeters (3 by 3 ft.) is a major design feature. With the HD Series, there is the ability to see either front or rear drum and spray systems clearly from the seat. Hamm’s spray system is comprised of flat-jet nozzles and is carefully metered for efficient sprinkling from two large, non-corroding, polyethylene 901 liter (238 gal.) water tanks.

Access to the engine compartment is via two large doors on either side, as well as a fully-tilting operator’s stand. This provides easy-to-reach service points and optimum working space.

Infinitely variable hydrostatic drive to both drums, dual frequencies of 2,520 and 3,000 vpm (on the HD 90 and HD 110) with infinite control of frequency, and dual amplitudes of .07 centimeters (.026 in.) and .04 centimeters (0.14 in.) controlled from the operation station provide the control needed for a superbly compacted surface.
