Construction Equipment Guide

Compaction America Inc.’s Hypac C766C and C778B vibratory double-drum compactors are designed with a new computer control system with microprocessor display. These rollers offer a “human-engineered” operator platform and a travel joystick with integrated thumb-tip vibration control. Additional improvements include a larger diameter steering wheel and larger water tanks.

The platform-mounted microprocessor display keeps machine performance in clear view of the operator. A travel system control lever enables the operator to preset the vibration engage/disengage speed and maximum rolling speed in either metric or English units. The microprocessor is designed to deliver ease of operation and high efficiency by providing consistency in system settings and performance. The multi-function display constantly provides the miles per hour, impacts per foot and front and rear vibration speed. Additionally, the microprocessor’s digital readout alerts the operator of electrical failures, enabling quick problem diagnoses and easy servicing.

In addition to setting operating parameters, the unique joystick travel control levers, mounted to each side of the operator console, provide forward, neutral and reverse direction control. Complete with an integrated thumb-tip vibration control, the travel lever allows for simple manual execution of the vibratory system, speed and direction with just one hand for added ease of operation.

Transmitting 95 percent of the vibratory energy into the work surface and not the machine or operator, the radial pneumatic drum isolators provide, a cushion of air between the drum and the frame. This design withstands vibratory stress better than conventional rubber-block isolators, extending the service life of the machine.

Both tandem roller models are equipped with a turbo-charged, after-cooled 93 kilowatt (125-hp) Cummins diesel engine, which offers plenty of power for tough applications while maintaining exceptional fuel economy. The engine is transverse mounted, positioned low in the rear frame for ease of service, rear drum visibility and directing heat and noise away from the operator.

The hydrostatically driven C766C and C778B are designed to deliver smooth speed and directional changes with speeds infinitely variable from 0 to 8 kilometers per hour (0 to 5 mph) in low range, and 0 to 16 kilometers per hour (0 to 10 mph) in high. Generating industry-class high vibrations per minute, these compactors deliver faster rolling speed to optimize productivity while retaining quality work. The C766C produces 3,400 vpm in low amplitude and 3,200 vpm in high amplitude with its 168-centimeter (66-in.) wide drum. The C778B, with a 198-centimeter (78-in.) rolling width produces 3,200 vpm in low amplitude and 3,100 vpm in high amplitude.

Concerned with operator safety, Compaction America built the Hypac C766C and C778B with standard Falling Object/Roll-Over Protective Structures (FOPS/ROPS) and seatbelts. Dual center facing seats provide excellent visibility of drums and work area in both forward and reverse.

For ease of service, all checkpoints and filters on Hypac’s double-drum compactors are within easy reach, and pressure test ports have standard capped fittings for quick, effortless servicing. To extend the life of the hydraulic components, oil is filtered through a high-efficiency, easily accessible, seven-micron filter. The ported hitch design on the C766C and C778B eliminates hose bundles found on most competitive units and protects the fuel supply line, electrical lines and hydraulic hoses from torsional stress damage.

The new Hypac vibratory double-drum compactors incorporate an improved water sprinkler system. With two 475- and 570-liter (125- and 150-gal.) water tanks respectively, the C766C and C778B now offer larger tanks than previous models, reducing downtime and increasing productivity. Whenever the travel lever is in the neutral position, water flow automatically stops, conserving water usage. Tank design and spray bar position deliver even water distribution to the drum and prevent wind drift.
