Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) officials announced that the second stage of the I-295 Southbound Reconstruction Project, west of the Delaware Memorial Bridge Toll Plaza to the I-95/I-495 split, began July 10.

Preparation activities for the traffic switch involved closing lanes and associated traffic ramps on I-295 Southbound through the construction zone (vicinity of I-295 Southbound/U.S. 13 interchange). Traffic on I-295 Southbound was shifted to the newly constructed left two lanes to allow for construction activity to begin on the right lanes and associated ramps of the interstate. With the successful completion of the first stage, the project is now approximately 45 percent complete.

The DRBA has designed the projects for as few delays as possible. However, some delays should be expected. The safety of the traveling public and on-site highway contractors is the agency's highest priority.

The posted speed limit of 40 mph in the construction zone will be strictly enforced. Commuters and travelers are urged to be careful and stay alert in and around construction zones, obey all posted speed limit signs, and plan to take a few extra minutes during the commute.

Mumford & Miller Concrete Inc. of Middletown, Del., is executing the construction work at a cost of $33.7 million. When highway work is concluded on this final phase in December 2018, the Authority will have invested more than $90 million to improve the region's infrastructure during the course of the I-295 Delaware Memorial Bridge Approach Road Rehabilitation program.
