Air compressors are used to convert power into potential energy stored as pressurized, or compressed, air. This power can then be used to power construction tools and machinery used by both professionals and do-it-yourselfers. Some of the most common tools powered by an air compressor are rock drills, jackhammers, air motors and pumps. These tools are used to crush rock, pour concrete, bore holes and cut materials, among other tasks. Air compressors have three pressure classifications: low, medium and high, and can also be classified according to their design and operation. These classifications include single-stage reciprocating, compound, scroll and centrifugal. The first use of an air compressor in a construction application dates back to the Swiss Alps in the 1800s.
