The dual-fuel feature allows the customer to operate on natural gas or liquid propane depending on the fuel source available without having to reconfigure the base engine.

Isuzu introduced its first dual-fuel 4HV1 engines and power units in the alternative fuels market to easily transition fuel choices on the job site. Isuzu is focused on eliminating downtime and rework within applications for equipment owners with these new power units and engines. This is done simply by sending a signal to the engine to instruct it for natural gas or liquid propane fuels via a supply to the pin connector in the machine interface.

New dual-fuel configurations have been developed for the 4HV1 spark ignited engine used in non- emergency and emergency standby generator applications and multi-speed applications. The dual-fuel configurations are available in both power units engines. The dual-fuel feature allows the customer to operate on natural gas or liquid propane depending on the fuel source available without having to reconfigure the base engine. The customer needs to supply a 12-volt or ground signal to the engine to indicate what fuel type will be used prior to engine start. Once the engine receives the fuel type signal, the electronic control module (ECM) will control the appropriate fuel lock-off valve and set the ignition timing and air/fuel ratio for the specified fuel type.

"After launch of the 4HV1 Alternative Fuel Engines in 2018 and Power Units in early 2019 we discovered numerous benefits to having the option to change the available fuel choice at the distribution level or within an onsite application. This dual-fuel system can eliminate excess stock, rework and downtime with a simple signal to the ECM/engine before it is restarted," said Cody Garcelon, director applications and sales engineering, Isuzu Motors America LLC.

In its design, Isuzu was able to achieve higher compression ratio, resulting in lower fuel consumption versus that of the lower compression ratio engines available in the off-road industrial industry. The 4HV1 dual-fuel engines and power units are built on the tested and proven heavy-duty diesel base foundation like that of other Isuzu diesel fuel products. The heavy-duty block, crankshaft, cylinder head, and connecting rods all lead to durable, long life benefits. Isuzu is one of the few in the alternative fuel marketplace with replaceable dry cylinder liners. The engines and power units also come equipped with oil pressure, coolant temperature, intake air pressure and temperature, and engine speed sensors and shutdowns, as Isuzu designs focus on safety and security. In their overall design, these engines focus on ease of maintenance and flexibility with both an engine-mounted, maintenance-free ECM and a 500-hour oil drain interval.

The new dual-fuel configured engines and power units complement Isuzu's robust line of diesel products and those already designed for either pipeline natural gas or liquid propane. All dual-fuel and alternative fuel applications are qualified by highly trained employees who are disciplined in engineering, manufacturing and management to help ensure the right products fit a customer's specific application.

Isuzu will be at ConExpo-Con/AGG March 10-14 in the South Hall.
