A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Sunday at the site of the National stadium, which is intended to become the main arena of the summer Olympic Games in 2020.
According to local media, the event was attended by the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, Governor of Tokyo Yuriko Koike, as well as the project's architect Kengo Kuma.
The new stadium will be built on the site of the demolished arena, which was exploited during the Olympic Games 1964. The cost of the National stadium is about $1.5 billion. The construction is scheduled for completion before the end of November 2019.
The initial construction project, designed by Zaha Hadid, was rejected by the Japanese government as too expensive, since spending on it exceeded $2 billion. The new construction plan was approved in September.
