South Plainfield equipment dealer Jesco Inc. recently assisted long-time customer J.F. Kiely Construction Co. with its equipment selection for a project Kiely has been awarded by the South Jersey Gas Co. in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. The contract was awarded to J.F. Kiely, following a competitive bid situation and was selected, in part, for the project due to its vast experience in gas utility installation.

The Egg Harbor Township job required the installation of 25,000 ft. (7,620 m) of 24-in. (61 cm) steel pipe as part of an expansion project for the South Jersey Gas Company’s LNG plant in McKey City, NJ.

Jesco President Drew Robustelli visited the job site to work with Kiely to help determine which machines would be best suited for the project.

“We suggested renting two of our 31-ton John Deere 270 CLC excavators to complement the two 27-ton 230 CLC models already in J.F. Kiely’s fleet, instead of using all-terrain cranes to place the pipe,” said Robustelli.

“Jesco worked with us at the job site to help determine what machines would be best utilized for laying the large amount of pipe required by this job,” said John M. Kiely, treasurer of J.F. Kiely Construction.

“They suggested using the larger 270 models equipped with a quick disconnect coupler system to maximize up time, instead of a crane and side booms. We agreed with their recommendations and quickly got the machines on site. The excavators replaced two pieces of equipment and were quite versatile. They saved us both time and money.”

Part of the increase in productivity on the job can be attributed to the excavators being equipped with JRB’s Smart Loc coupler system, which allowed the operators to quickly disconnect the bucket as required.

“The Smart Loc coupler system saved us a tremendous amount of time by allowing the machine operators to work on other projects such as trenching, blacktop and road gravel removal, digging tie-in holes and hanging pipe for welders when they weren’t placing the pipe,” said Kiely. “They also allowed us to install 500 feet of 24 inch pipe at one time.

“Jesco helped us on this job by providing a complete turnkey solution to our equipment needs. From providing on-site applications assistance and rental options, to superior customer service, they helped us keep our job moving,” added Kiely.

To ensure maximum uptime, J.F. Kiely also contracted Jesco to provide periodic on-site maintenance to its equipment throughout the course of the project.

Over the past two years, J.F. Kiely has purchased a substantial amount of equipment from Jesco to accommodate its growth. Kiely made the decision to begin buying the company’s equipment from Jesco because, he said, of “their focus on customer service” and continues to buy from Jesco “because of their knowledgeable and committed sales, service and support staffs.”

Besides the two, 230 John Deere excavators that Kiely bought from Jesco and the two, 270 John Deere excavators rented from them, there were other pieces of equipment on the job site purchased from Jesco, including a John Deere 644H and a 544H wheel loader, two John Deere 310SG backhoes and a 624 side-boom wheel loader.

J.F. Kiely, founded in 1952, is well known for its expertise in gas utility installation. The firm’s client roster includes the New Jersey Natural Gas Company, the South Jersey Gas Company, Public Service Electric & Gas Company and the American Water Company.

J.F. Kiely employs more than 250 in five locations throughout New Jersey and offers a wide array of services including: directional boring, high-pressure tapping, welding, pressure testing, pipe installation and restoration and heavy transport.
