JCB’s JS145 crawler excavator is a 14.5 ton machine, powered by a JCB Ecomax diesel engine, delivering a powerful 108 hp (81 kW). As with all 4.4-L Ecomax engines, these motors meet the Tier IV Interim emissions standards without using a bulky, expensive diesel particulate filter (DPF) or an exhaust after-treatment system such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR).
Maximum Efficiency
Revised hydraulics and improved control systems, in combination with the highly efficient Ecomax engine, results in fuel savings of up to 10 percent for the customer in normal excavation duties. The lack of a DPF system also allows the JCB designers to fit an engine hood that is considerably lower than some competitors, improving visibility and safety on site, according to the manufacturer.
The JS145’s hydraulic circuits and pumps have been optimized to deliver improved efficiency and machine performance. Through a new “smart control” LCD monitor in the cab, operators can fine tune the automatic idle control. Selection of the working power bands has been simplified, with color coding on the multi-function monitor promoting use of the machine within the green economy zone.
Power bands are now selected through a single dial, replacing the engine speed selector. By turning the dial, engine speed increases and the corresponding power band is automatically selected. Power boost is available through all four power bands. It is automatic in the L band (light/lifting) with manual selection in G (general), H (heavy) & H+ (heavy+). JCB has achieved significant noise reductions with this machine, both in the cab and externally. In-cab noise levels are now set at just 72dB(A), with external noise recordings of 99dB(A). A proportional control system for the engine cooling fan enables low operating speeds, contributing to this cut in noise levels.
Monitor Customization
The JS145 has a 3.5 in. full color multi-function display as standard. Easy to read in all light conditions, the display can be customized by the operator to show key information, including two trip functions. Analogue gauges at the bottom of the display indicate the machine fuel level and coolant temperature.
The display features a menu-based system allowing the operator to view additional information. Access and navigation through the monitor menus is achieved using buttons and a rotary control in front of the display. JCB also is offering an optional 7 in. monitor with the ability to display video images from up to two camera inputs, at the rear and the side of the machine.
LiveLink Benefits
Through electronically-controlled engines it has been possible to enhance the JCB LiveLink telematic interface. LiveLink can now deliver full fuel consumption data. Machine security is enhanced too, with the use of advanced ECU pairing, where the LiveLink ECU and the machine’s electronic control unit communicate to prevent unauthorized use of the machine.
Tool Select
Operators also can control flow of the single direction auxiliary hydraulic circuit through the LCD monitor, using JCB’s tool select system from the comfort of the cab. The optional advanced tool select system increases functionality, allowing the operator to adjust both flow and pressure of bi direction auxiliary hydraulic circuits independent of engine rpm. This facilitates the operation of attachments at their design ratings, ensuring optimum performance, maximum productivity and the lowest possible fuel consumption, while preventing wear to the attachment. Up to 10 unique tool settings can be stored in the monitor, facilitating quick tool changes, minimizing machine down time.
