Wed April 16, 2014 - National Edition
Kobelco Construction Machinery USA’s, SK850LC model crawler excavator has returned to the North American market. This super-sized machine is the largest excavator in Kobelco’s product line, packing performance, productivity and fuel efficiency in one piece of equipment, according to the manufacturer.
The SK850 is built with a 510 hp high pressure, common-rail fuel-injected engine offering an increased amount of power while remaining eco-friendly. The machine’s multiple injection system has an adjustable control to maximize fuel efficiency and provide substantial low-end torque, while its exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system lessens the formation of harmful emissions. This model has three work modes, H, D and Eco, which can be selected based on the work at hand to optimize efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. Through a single button in the cab, operators can choose to work in H mode, ideal for heavy-duty work when extra power is needed, D mode for loading tasks or Eco mode, which puts priority on low fuel consumption and economic machine performance for lighter duty digging and moving.
Despite the 183,951 lb. (83,438 kg) machine’s massive size, dependable performance and operational control are no problem for the SK850. The excavator is equipped with Kobelco’s newly enhanced total control system (ITCS). ITCS allows the machine to accurately recognize an operator’s actions at the control levers, adjusting the hydraulics based on the work being completed. An auto-acceleration function is provided to smoothly increase engine rpms and hydraulic flow in coordination with the operator’s movements, while auto-deceleration will reduce engine rpms after a set amount of inactivity, extending engine life and reducing fuel costs. Power boost with no time limit and heavy lift are also standard. Regardless of the job’s size, the SK850 offers the ultimate in productivity with a bucket breakout force of 79,582 lbs., a dig depth of 31 ft. 10 in. (9.7 m) and a 2.5 to 7.0 cu. yd. (1.9 to 5.3 cu m) bucket. A 35,453 lb. (16,081 kg) counterweight allows for stable operation across a variety of applications.
Robust by design, the SK850 was engineered utilizing Kobelco’s finite element method (FEM) analysis to determine the best-suited materials and structural design for optimum strength. This model features multiple heavy-duty components including a long, sturdy X-frame and slewing ring for outstanding stability and balance, a rugged arm and boom made of thick-plate steel as well as rollers, idlers, and travel motors sealed and lubricated for long term reliability. The SK850 also is constructed with dual swing motors for consistent and reliable power, a reinforced travel reduction gear cover and flanged steel bucket bushings for maximum durability in even the toughest of applications.
Kobelco’s SK850 is not only tenacious, but also comfortable to operate. With long work days in brutal conditions, operators will be pleased with the excavator’s oversized cab, abundance of leg room and storage area. Wide cab doors make for easy entry and exit, while large, moveable glass windows provide views from all angles with minimal obstruction and excellent ventilation. A 7-way adjustable suspension seat allows for personalized comfort and right-side located controls provide convenient access to critical functions. The SK850 has a multi-display LCD monitor with easy to read instruments which gather vital machine data, including self-diagnostics with fault code memory, warning screens and audible alarms that alert the operator to temperature and pressure status. A climate-controlled cab and AM/FM stereo are included as standard equipment.
The SK850 makes service convenient with its central maintenance walk, which allows for easy access to essential components including the engine, hydraulics and filters. Kobelco’s platform-designed walk also serves as an air duct to increase air flow to the oil cooler and radiator, reducing the possibility of overheating. When looking to transport the SK850, Kobelco has made it simple, specifically designing the excavator to be assembled or disassembled in a 12-step process with four possible modes of transport. The SK850’s variable gauge track system provides versatility and ease of transportation allowing the 900mm tracks to retract to a minimum of 12 ft. 6 in. (3.8 m) for flatbed loading while expanding to a maximum of 14 ft. 7 in. (4.4 m) for onsite operation.
