May Heavy Equipment LLC (“May-Heavy” or the “Company”) is rapidly expanding its presence in the Carolinas, with the opening of the newest branch in Charleston, S.C.
May Heavy’s location is highly visible from I-26 and centrally located in Charleston’s growth corridor. “There is a great deal of new construction going on in greater Charleston to accommodate Boeing, Tech Industry and Charleston Port expansion. “We felt now was the time to purchase a facility to better serve existing customers and build additional market share by providing sales, service, parts and warranty from a dedicated Charleston location.” said Richie Ambrose, vice president new sales, May Heavy Equipment.
May Heavy was already doing a significant amount of business in Charleston, but without a dealership and service center location. Prior to the facility purchase, May Heavy covered the Charleston area with resident sales representatives and technicians with support from May Heavy’s Columbia Facility.
“The purchase of the Charleston facility represents a key milestone in our ongoing efforts to become the premier heavy equipment rental and sales company in South Carolina.” said Jessie Beasley, general manager of South Carolina.
Overall the facility is approximately 6,000 sq. ft. (557.4 sq m) and includes the shop, offices and parts counter. The new facility sits on just over three acres at 1050 Drop Off Drive, Summerville, SC 29486.
Ambrose explained that what drew their attention to the facility more than anything was its prime location. “The facility is the first thing that you notice coming into Charleston,” he said. “In addition, it is located close to the recently announced Volvo manufacturing plant.”
May Heavy contemplated building a new facility, but timing was a factor. “We have established relationships and customers and when we evaluated the time and cost of building versus the immediate presence from purchasing, we decided investing in Charleston now to support our growing business and existing customers was the best business choice.”
Earlier this year, May Heavy Equipment announced that it will move its center of operations from N.C. Highway 8 to a large, more visible property adjacent to I-85 in Lexington NC. The company is currently building a new 5,862 sq. ft. (554.5 sq m) corporate office and 15,100 sq. ft. (1402.8 sq m) service center on 49 acres not far from the Lexington, N.C.,. Airport.
“Given the growth in the Carolina’s, May Heavy has been very active in expanding locations to better serve our customers and support our manufacturers.” Ambrose said.
May Heavy currently stocks more than 250 rental machines consisting of, excavators, wheel loaders, dozers, compaction equipment motor graders and articulated trucks.
May Heavy Equipment is the authorized new equipment and parts service and warranty dealer in South Carolina of Hyundai Construction excavators and loaders, Kawasaki wheel loaders, Terex trucks, Sakai compaction, Bomag (compaction, soil stabilizers, milling machines and Cedar Rapids pavers), and NorAm motor graders. The company also represents LayMor sweepers and Magnum Power Products. The same products are offered in most of North Carolina, with the exception of Sakai and NorAm.

Brenda Ruggiero
