The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to notify the public of the final phase of the Rockvale - Laurel project.

The Rockvale - Laurel (NB Lanes) project will add approximately 6.6 mi. of two-lane highway to the newly constructed U.S. Highway 212. This project will complete the full four-lane roadway from reference post 42.1 near Rockvale in Carbon County and continuing northeast to reference post 52.7 just south of Laurel in Yellowstone County.

The purpose of the proposed project is to accommodate growing traffic volumes, resolve safety conflicts between the highway's dual purpose of transporting regional tourist and truck traffic and transporting local traffic, and provide access for local roadways and land use.

The project is the final phase of the overall project presented in the Record of Decision for the Final Environmental Impact Statement for Rockvale to Laurel, completed in September 2009. The public may access the completed environmental documents under the heading “Rockvale to Laurel” at mdt.mt.gov/pubinvolve/eis_ea_finalized.shtml

All earthwork, irrigation, utility relocation and right-of-way work for this project has been completed in earlier phases. This phase of the project is tentatively scheduled for construction beyond 2019, depending on completion of all project development activities and availability of funding.
