Minnich Manufacturing recently introduced its new A-1-UTL utility drill, designed for use in confined areas where handheld electric rotary hammers were previously required. The A-1-UTL utility drill can be used for either vertical or horizontal drilling. The wheeled unit is set up similar to a dolly and uses compressed air to power the drill bit.
According to Minnich Representative Todd Jurjevic, the productivity and safety advantages over hand held units are many. The A-1-UTL utility drill eliminates the need for the operator to kneel or bend in awkward positions to drill, reducing operator fatigue while the drill is configured to distance the operator’s face and body from the work area for increased safety from chips and dust. In timed trials, the unit can drill five holes in the same time it takes a hand held unit to drill a single hole.
Another safety feature is the handle grip lever design that instantly cuts power to the drill when released. The unit is lightweight and can be unloaded and loaded from a truck by one person. Because the drill is driven by compressed air, it can also be used for drilling access holes into concrete or asphalt for gas leak detectors, an application prohibited by electric powered drills.
The range of applications for the drill showcase its versatility.
For instance, an A-1-UTL utility drill was recently used to drill post holes for string line stakes on an airport runway construction job where concrete is mixed with the soil in the ground stabilization process. Pounding the stakes into the ground was not possible.
The A-1-UTL Utility Drill comes in two standard kit models; the A-1-24 UTL can drill a maximum depth of 7 in. (17.8 cm) with drill bit diameters ranging from .625 to 1 in. (1.6 to 2.5 cm) and the A-1-30 UTL drills to a depth of 10 in. (25.4 cm) with drill bit diameters matching the A-1-24 UTL.
Jurjevic said the A-1-UTL utility drill can be customized for customers to address a wide range of applications and continues Minnich’s willingness to provide solutions for customer’s unique requirements.
