The Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association (MITA) held it's annual conference and trade show on Jan. 24 to 25 at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The theme for this year's event was “How to Survive” and both day's keynote speakers exemplified the drive and determination needed for survival.

On Jan 24., the keynote talk was given by Richard Picciotto, former New York Fire Department chief and highest ranking firefighter to survive the World Trade Center collapse. Chief Picciotto addressed the audience on facing diversity and the role that courage, preparation and leadership play in determining the outcome.

The keynote speaker on Jan. 25, Aron Ralston, was the subject of the film 127 Hours, which chronicled his ordeal when trapped by a boulder while climbing. His talk provided attendees with insights on the qualities of courage and perseverance needed to confront and ultimately overcoming seemingly impossible odds

In addition to a Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association political action update and overview of Michigan's regulatory issues, the event included a series of educational sessions to provide attendees with insights on upcoming business opportunities and provide them with information needed to perform their work and succeed. As an added bonus, many of the courses carried the additional benefit of continuing education credits.

The trade show portion of the event was designed to give attendees a chance to engage with representatives from Michigan's leading equipment, product and service providers while learning their latest offerings.

Major event sponsors included AIS Construction Equipment Corporation / Contractors Rental Corporation, Alta Equipment Company and Michigan Cat.

Established in 2005, the Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association is a statewide organization representing companies involved with Michigan's road and bridge, sewer and water, utility, railroad, excavation and specialty construction.
