Jim Stock is a busy man. His company, Savage Equipment, is in charge of not one, but two locations doing site work for housing developments. The first site is located in Newburgh, N.Y., where his team is prepping a 74-acre property for 100 houses to be built. The second site in Monroe, N.Y., is doing the same only there is more ground to cover with approximately 200 houses in the plans to be built.
Stock and his team work hard doing the excavation, preparing the site for utilities, running gas mains, water mains and power for these future developments. To get the job done, Stock turned to Hoffman Equipment to rent and purchase a variety machines, including excavators, dozers and dump trucks.
When on the job site you'll recognize different varieties of equipment manufacturers that Savage Equipment uses. Stock says he is not necessarily loyal to one branch.
“I'm dollar sensitive. All machines today have the same bells and whistles so why pay more for the brand?”
A Doosan DX420LC-5 made it into his fleet when he purchased the machine in July 2017. He added this to his collection that includes a DX255 that was purchased in 2016 and a DX180 that was purchased in 2012. Other brands on site include a new Case dozer, a new Tier IV PR726 Liebherr dozer, and a 30 ton off-road Terex haul truck.
“I may not be brand loyal but I am dealer loyal. I've been working with Hoffman Equipment for 20 years. They treat me well and that's why I keep coming back. My sales rep, John Haig, is a good salesman who is very helpful. He's not far from my office so he brings me what I need when I need it and I'm grateful for that.”
Both job sites in New York are expected to be completed in 3 to 4 years. Stock and his team are working tirelessly to complete both projects, but with any construction site, there are always some hurdles.
In Newburgh, the soil is very temperamental.
“If it rains, we get delayed. The soil is clay-like and when it gets wet, it's difficult to work with.”
In Monroe, the future development is actually spread over two towns, the Village of Monroe and the Town of Monroe. Because of this, work gets delayed when trying to obtain permits from two different towns — towns who don't always correspond with each other.
Despite these little bumps in the road, Stock and his team continue to power through. With the variety of powerful equipment on site, a loyal dealer ready to help and Stock's overall work ethic and passion for what he does there is no doubt that these developments will get done in the allotted time.
Savage Equipment Company Inc. has been providing excavation work to northern New Jersey and southern New York since 1995. It is a privately held company in Hewitt, N.J.
