At its fourth quarterly Board Meeting in Washington D.C., the National Skill Standards Board (NSSB) elected Board Member Tim Flynn, chairman emeritus of LodgeNet Entertainment Corporation, as the organization’s new chairman. He succeeds James R. Houghton, chairman of Corning Inc., who has led the board since its inception in 1995.

Flynn, who was appointed to NSSB in 1998 by then-Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota, will lead the organization as it moves forward with the continued expansion of a voluntary national system of skills standards, assessments and certification.

"I am honored to be the new chairman of NSSB," remarked Flynn. "I wish to thank Jamie Houghton for his superb leadership over the past six years in laying the foundation for the skill standards system framework. The NSSB system is gaining momentum, and I am eager to lead the organization to continued success in the future."

Flynn founded LodgeNet Entertainment Corporation in 1980. Under his direction, LodgeNet has become a large provider of interactive entertainment and information services to the lodging industry, serving more than 4,100 hotel properties in all 50 states, Canada and select international markets.

He was responsible for leading the company into the arena of advanced interactivity and digital interactive information services, such as on-demand movies, video games, Internet and multi-media services.

Houghton steps down as NSSB chairman after six years at the helm. Under his leadership, the NSSB created the framework for the country’s first-ever, voluntary national skills standards system; developed a common format and language for the development of skill standards and certifications; established four Voluntary Partnerships and other Industry Coalitions; and garnered strong business support for its efforts. Houghton intends to remain an active member of the NSSB Board and will continue serving on its Executive Committee.

The National Skill Standards Board is building a voluntary national system of skill standards, assessment and certification that will enhance the ability of the United States to compete effectively in a global economy.

The standards are set by the industry in full partnership with education, labor, civil rights and community-based organizations. The standards will be based on high performance work and will be portable across industry sectors.
