Oklahoma transportation officials have approved a new construction plan that calls for postponing more than 40 percent of all projects due to state funding cuts.

The Oklahoman reports the Oklahoma Transportation Commission approved the new eight-year plan Oct. 2, in response to $840 million in state funding cuts over the last seven years. It calls for $6.3 billion in federal and state transportation funding.

Officials say the plan delays construction of 620 projects. Forty construction projects also have been removed from the plan.

Oklahoma Department of Transportation Executive Director Mike Patterson said the new plan focuses on improving the state's major transportation corridors that see heavy truck traffic loads. The department has previously focused on rehabilitating or replacing structurally deficient bridges.
