OSHA Announces New Deadlines

Mon December 04, 2017 - Southeast Edition #25
Construction Equipment Guide

Recently, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced new dates for two rules affecting the demolition industry. The first is the deadline for submittal of injury and illness data for 2016, and the second is the deadline for crane and derricks certification.

To allow affected employers additional time to become familiar with a new electronic reporting system launched in August, OSHA has extended the date by which employers must electronically report injury and illness data for 2016 through the Injury Tracking Application (ITA) to Dec. 15, 2017. NDA submitted written comments to OSHA supporting the proposed deadline extension.

OSHA's final rule on electronic reporting of illness and injuries requires certain employers to electronically submit injury and illness information they are already required to keep under existing OSHA regulations. Unless an employer is under federal jurisdiction, the following OSHA-approved state plans have not yet adopted the requirement to submit injury and illness reports electronically: California, Maryland, Minnesota, South Carolina, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Establishments in these states are not currently required to submit their summary data through the ITA.

OSHA also announced a new deadline for employers to ensure that crane operators are certified by one year until Nov. 10, 2018. OSHA also is extending its employer duty to ensure that crane operators are competent to operate a crane safely for the same one-year period.
