W.F. Hammell Nurseries started out as a landscaping company in 1975. Founded by William Hammell, the company eventually moved into the nursery business. Today the Honeybrook, PA, company boasts 750 acres planted in trees spread out over eight farms in the Southeastern part of Chester County. The nursery specializes in growing top quality shade and ornamental trees.

It takes a lot of equipment to farm this land efficiently, and when it came time to upgrade its fleet the company turned to Eagle Power & Equipment, headquartered in Montgomeryville, PA, to supply them with a Takeuchi TL150 and 10 TL 140 compact rubber-track loaders.

According to company president Jordan Hammell, it supplies trees to wholesale customers from Maine, down through the Mid-Atlantic States, and throughout the Midwest, all the way to Chicago.

As the founder’s son, Hammell was groomed his entire life to work in the family business. He graduated with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture, and with the death of his father three years ago, he took over the reins as the head of the company.

“My father believed in combining a high-quality product, with a knowledgeable staff, and excellent service and having the right equipment to get the job done,” said Hammell.

Good reliable equipment is essential to maintaining the high standards for which the company is known, so purchasing the right machines for its need was critical. One of the major selling points of the Takeuchi compact loaders was the track design. Its 18-inch wide rubber tracks allow for easy operation on the difficult clay soil of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

“These tracks are excellent for traction and reducing compaction around trees, allowing us to dig and load without forming ruts. As a result, the rows from harvesting activities receive minimal impact, enabling us to maintain consistent growth,” he said.

“We also wanted uniformity in our equipment, and the Takeuchi loaders provide it. The machines will be equipped with Dutchman tree spades, which are excellent for planting and digging, and because the attachments are interchangeable, we don’t ever have to worry about down time,” Hammell said.

Hammell also was impressed with the level of service he received from Takeuchi and Eagle Power & Equipment.

“Takeuchi representatives worked with me to make sure that I had the equipment best suited to our work environment,” he said, “and Eagle Power has been very responsive to our needs. And with their Eagle, PA, branch so close by, we know that their service people can be here very quickly if we should ever experience any problems.”
