Procter & Gamble (P&G) is making a $500 million capital investment to build a new manufacturing plant and warehouse on a tract of land in Tabler Station, W.Va., which is in Berkeley County. This area is near Martinsburg in the rural mountains of the state's western panhandle.
The 450-acre site was reportedly purchased for $30 million. The project began in October 2015, and is expected to be completed sometime in 2019. It is currently on schedule, and will add to the list of more than 25 sites that P&G currently operates across the country.
The general contractor is Fluor, under the direction of Brian Robinson. P&G's senior engineer on site is Luis Gutierrez.
The new plant will reportedly employ 700 full-time employees and the site will include production modules, an administrative area, a rail yard, and a warehouse, covering more than 1 million sq. ft.
“There was an enormous amount of rock that had to be moved,” said Jeff Leroy, P&G media contact. “It took a year just to blast the rock and grade the site prior to pouring concrete. We moved [more than] 6 million cubic yards of earth and rock. We have just begun to pour concrete.”
According to Leroy, the area is currently the largest construction site in West Virginia.
Major subcontractors include ALL/Alleghany for earthworks; Fluor, for engineering, construction management, and procurement; Bluescope/Butler, for structural steel supply; Coastal for piling; and Maine Drilling and Blasting for blasting.
Major equipment used on the job includes Caterpillar dozers, D6-D10; Volvo articulated dump trucks; Komatsu 800 and 1250 excavators; Caterpillar 777 off-road dump trucks; and numerous pieces of smaller equipment. There are about 80 earthmovers on site.
A P&G press release noted that when the plant opens, it will be one of the most advanced and sustainable plants among P&G's global manufacturing and supply-chain operations. The new, multi-category manufacturing plant is part of a redesign of P&G's North American supply network.
“This new plant will leverage economies of scale and standardized manufacturing platforms to P&G's advantage by allowing us to produce multiple brands at one strategic location,” said Yannis Skoufalos, P&G's global product supply officer.
The list of products to be produced at the new facility include Bounce fabric enhancers; shampoos and conditioners, including Pantene, Head & Shoulders, Aussie, Herbal Essences and Vidal Sassoon; and body wash products, including Olay and Old Spice.
“This is a significant investment by Procter & Gamble and a huge win for the state of West Virginia,” said Gov.
