Construction will soon begin on a cruise terminal complex at Florida's Port Canaveral. The $150 million Cruise Terminal 3 project will be the largest one in the Port's history, Florida Today reported.
On March 28, port commissioners approved a demolition contract for the existing Cruise Terminal 3.
"This is the largest program we've ever undertaken here at the port, so we're very excited about it," said Bill Crowe, senior director of facilities at Port Canaveral, to port commissioners.
In Sept. 2017, architectural firm Bermello Ajmil & Partners of Miami was chosen to perform the lead design work for the new terminal. The project's design work is now about one-third complete, Florida Today reported.
In addition, Frank-Lin Services of Brevard, from Melbourne, have been contracted for $210,000 to demolish the existing terminal. Their bid was the lowest of 14 submitted.
Other contracts will be awarded between May and August 2018 for:
- berth and dredging;
- the passenger boarding bridge;
- the terminal itself and other site work; and
- a parking garage.
A projected completion date has been set for Dec. 2019, Florida Today reported.
But Cruise Terminal 3 isn't the only major project happening around the Port. Other cargo and infrastructure initiatives totaling more than $38 million will continue through 2019, Florida Today reported.
"There's a lot happening at the port," said John Murray, Port Canaveral CEO.
Here's a roundup of some of the other Port Canaveral projects:
North Cargo Pier 1 and 2
- GLF Construction was chosen in Sept. 2017 to do rehab work on these piers for $4.69 million. A grant totaling $1.59 million from Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development will pay for a portion of the project.
- According to Crowe, this project is one of the port's most complicated because crews will be working while the piers remain in use.
- The project includes new concrete, bollards and fenders.
- Work is slated to be complete by June 2018.
North Cargo Berth 8
- A $17.92 million contract went to Orion Marine Construction for this project in January 2018. A grant totaling $8.58 million from Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development will pay for a portion of the project.
- The company is currently engaged in site prep work before building a new bulkhead wall and pier extension.
- The project is expected to be complete in summer 2019.
'Wayfaring' and Directional Signs
- The $7.66 million contract for this project was awarded to Ivey's Construction in February 2018, which will be funded, in part, by a grant from the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund.
- The project has an expected completion date of spring 2019.
Cruise Road Network
- This project will focus on renovating the network of cruise terminal roadways on the port's north side.
- While no contracts have been awarded yet, Ivey's Construction and P&S Paving have been placed on a "short list" as finalists.
- The project's budget is $7.3 million.
- Work is expected to be complete in fall 2019.
New Cruise Parking Lot
- This new, 280-space paid lot will help to alleviate parking congestion from the Cruise Terminal 1 parking garage on the port's south side.
- According to Murray, this overflow lot is necessary since next year's addition of Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas ship will make parking more difficult.
- A contract for the project is expected to be awarded in May or June of 2018.
Bait-and-Tackle Shop
- Doug Wilson Contracting was awarded a $643,040 contract for this project in Sept. 2018.
- The new facility will include retail space and a café featuring a deck and outdoor seating.
