Spurred by fast growth in northern Texas, crews are adding frontage lanes to I-20 in Grand Prairie, Texas.

The new lanes will be wider frontage roads. Cost of the project is set at $54 million.

The project includes construction of new frontage roads and ramps, reconstruction and reconfiguration of the intersections at Robinson Road and Carrier Parkway, reconstruction and reconfiguration of a section of Westchase Drive south of I-20, construction of U-turns at Carrier Parkway and Belt Line Road and construction of sidewalks along I-20 frontage roads and a section of Robinson Road and Carrier Parkway.

Work has been underway on the project for several years.

Studies found that in two years, the city's population will increase eight percent. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the I-20 project between Belt Line Road and State Highway 161 is a "high priority," project that will create greater access for drivers.

The 2.3-mi. long project is scheduled to be finished in 2023. Crews are currently working on three frontage lanes in both directions.

I-20 is a major east–west highway running east from a junction with I-10 east of Kent through the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex to the border with Louisiana near Waskom, Texas. I-20 is known as the Ronald Reagan Memorial Highway within the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Fluor Corporation, headquartered in Irving, Texas, was awarded a bid-build contract for the project. Subcontractors on the job include: Texas Shafts Inc., Fort Worth; Reynolds Asphalt & Construction Co., North Richland Hills, Texas; and LR Falk Construction Co., Briarcliff, Texas.

Each side of the highway will contain one or two 12-ft.-wide inside travel lanes, one 14-ft.-wide outside shared-use lane and one 12-ft.-wide auxiliary lane. Sections of the current eastbound and westbound frontage road between SH 161 and Robinson Road will be replaced to align with the new frontage roads. Curbs and gutters also are being built.

A 6-ft. wide sidewalk will be located along the outer lanes of each frontage road.

The existing right-of-way width ranges from approximately 455 ft. to 745 ft. The proposed right-of-way width ranges from approximately 455 ft. to 825 ft. The total estimated additional right-of-way needed for the proposed project is approximately 4.63 acres and approximately 0.67 acre is needed for proposed drainage easements.

TxDOT's investment in the project is part of the overall development of Dallas County and will continue the area's industrial and commercial development. CEG
